Schalchtfeld (a)

for solo performer/dancer
Premiere: Amadeus Julian Regucera, June 2015 (6 minutes)

At one point in Heiner Müller’s play Die Hamletmaschine, Ophelia’s character says, “Ich zerstöre das Schlachtfeld das mein Heim war (I destroy the battlefield that was my home).” In my piece Schlachtfeld, the body becomes the site of struggle between inner and outer spaces, a tension that is created when what is felt inside is at odds with the world. Through the deployment of a few dense physical gestures in the performance space (manipulating breath, straining the body, walking blindly), one may hopefully hear the music of a body searching for a utopia. My thanks to Elysa Wendi with whom I worked closely on this piece at the Hong Kong Modern Academy as well as to composer Joyce Koh. This piece is hopefully the beginning of a larger, ongoing project in the vein of “embodied” or “physiological” music in my work.
